Juglands spp. of the family Juglandaceae. Includes numerous species in the genus Juglands. "Tropical" walnut (on this site) includes any walnut that is specified as being either "tropical", OR from anywhere in South America, including Peruvian walnut which itself consists of at least 4 species in the genus Juglands.
my samples: NOTE: these pics were all taken in very bright incandescent lighting ("soft white" at 2700K) colors will vary under other lighting conditions
both sides of a sample plank of tropical (Honduran) walnut / Juglans olanchana --- HUGE enlargements are present. This sample was loaned to me by David Clark whom I thank for this and other contributions to the site.
end grain and end grain closeup of the piece directly above
both sides of a planks listed as Argentine walnut / Juglans australis

both sides of a sample plank of Argentine walnut / Juglans australis --- HUGE enlargements are present. This sample was loaned to me by David Clark whom I thank for this and other contributions to the site. The 2nd side has been lightly sanded, removing the age patina that you can still see on the first side.

both sides of a plank of Peruvian walnut / Juglans spp. --- HUGE enlargements are present. This was cut from one of the larger planks shown on this page but I've lost track of which one.
end grain and end grain closeup of the piece directly above
Peruvian walnut plank and closeup --- the piece directly below is taken from this plank
one side and end grain of a plank that was cut from the larger plank directly above, and then sanded on all surfaces.
the other side and end grain of the same plank
end grain closeups from both ends of the piece directly above --- the slanted streaks in the top pic and the horizontal streaks in the bottom pic are sanding scratches. In both cases, the fine, lighter, streaks that run perpendicular to the growth rings are rays (which can be seen MUCH more clearly in the update directly below)
numerous views of the same 12-foot long plank of Peruvian walnut
Peruvian walnut planks photographed at a lumber yard --- the pics are a little washed out and the wood is just slightly darker that what shows up here, but no where near as dark as the planks directly above
